Many people have, like us, wanted to make life easier for tinnitus sufferers. However to date there has been no method of getting rid of tinnitus entirely. Intervention methods used by sufferers up to the present are broad ranging, sometimes inconclusively proven to help and often down right bizarre.
Tinnitus can be the result of stress and as such can be exacerbated by stress. Focusing on the ringing in the ears can cause stress and anxiety, and then the ringing becomes louder due to this stress. Sleeping then becomes increasingly difficult due to louder ringing and we all know that a lack of sleep leads to further stress and worry, which in turn makes the tinnitus worse. This vicious circle is experienced by millions everyday.
One of the most popular intervention methods is tinnitus masking. This is where another sound, like white noise, a fan humming or the sound of the ocean, is played in the background to distract from the tinnitus. This method is often used by people to help them to sleep at night.
There are other remedies too that have worked for some sufferers in managing their tinnitus but they are not conclusively proven to help in all cases. For example, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, self-help books, hypnosis, electrical stimulation, anti-depressant drugs, migraine drugs, medication used for treating alcoholism, nervous system depressants and muscle relaxants.
As well as intervention methods there are also prevention measures that one can carry out to reduce the risk of getting tinnitus. Examples include removing earwax, changing current medication, avoiding exposure to loud noise, reducing consumption of alcohol, tobacco and caffeine, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight. Again not all of these are entirely conclusively proven and as you can see they only form a part of a healthy lifestyle.
